Mom
We didn’t get to tell you because it all happened so fast. You need to know how much we love you. How lucky we were to call you our mom. How proud we were of you. How sad we are that you left us so quickly. How much we miss you.
You left an incredible mark on each of us. We are all better because of you. The world is better because of you.
You are an inspiration to us. Your selflessness. Your kindness. Your tenacity. Your strength. Your commitment. Your wisdom. If we can achieve one tenth of what you did, we will all leave the world a much better place.
Thank you for not just setting an example, thank you being the example. You were truly remarkable.
Yes you were a community builder, a local hero. But above all else, you were our mom, and you were amazing.

To Al and family let me say that I am so sorry to hear of Helen’s passing. She was an amazing woman and I will always remember how unselfish she was and that she left the world a better place. In the short few years that we lived on Sault Street I remember you two as being quite a couple. You the visionary and get er done guy and Helen the unbridled resource enabler. I don’t remember her asking if we could do something but rather did it need to be done and then she would go about mustering resources. I remember too her typing the stencils for the Newsliner in our basement, on into the night as the deadline approached, and while she never seemed critical she had a way of getting her point across. While I gluing and making/ laying out stencils I oft heard her say: “Gee, I don’t know this Lem” and that was the alert that something needed to be changed. She was bricks and mortar of the community: the Newsliner, church service, cubs, community fair, etc all contributed to our community Identity and cohesiveness. All of them she supported and was persuasive in gathering community support. If all this sounds like I have her on a pedestal: I do. She accomplished what most of us talk or dream about; she left the world a better place. I am sure that she has gone to the choicest of locations in the after life.

I was so saddened to learn of Helen’s passing. My very sincerest condolences to each of you. Her bright warm smile and her dedicated work with The Friends of the Ottawa Public Library at the Cumberland branch endeared her to so many of us.

In the early 1970's, my family lived in a rented home in Manordale, well on the other (west) side of Ottawa. But we finally had enough money to finally purchase our first home and Queenswood Heights had new homes we could afford. So we put a downpayment on a home and hoped we hadn't made a mistake. A neighbour in Manordale had a co-worker who lived in QH and said he loved it there and even gave us a copy of the Queenswood Heights Newsliner to read before the actual move. Well, that was it! Helen was the editor and chief contributor and publisher and distributor and she told the community all we needed to know. It wasn't long before my husband, Dave, myself and my two sons were made welcome and involved in the community ourselves. Helen and Al and their family always made everyone welcome in their home and the community It is a wonderful place to raise a family and a good part of that is thanks to the Tweddle family. Helen will be so missed by all of us. Dave Jr., Jeff and I offer our sincere condolences to all the Tweddle family and to those many who also loved her.

My deepest sympathies to Al and family. I first met Helen in 1983 and was always amazed at her energy, devotion and passionate spirit towards the community she lived in. Queenswood Heights would not have been the same without Helen's engagement throughout all of those years. Losing a pillar like Helen is losing some of our identity.

Al, Sue and family,
There are no words that could provide comfort in this time of loss. I can only express that I am mindful of your sadness and I care
I had the privilege of working with Helen for 9 years through the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library. She led her team calmly diligently and with great common sense. Anything I asked her to do was done promptly and done well. She never took credit for her many many accomplishments and service to this community. She was a pleasure to work with.
Even though I was only a volunteer colleague I could tell how much she valued family and loved you all.

I first met Helen when I started volunteering at the bookstore almost 7 years ago and she immediately made me feel like a valued member of the group. My heart goes out to the Tweddle family and I am so deeply sorry for your loss.
I have such amazing memories of your home in Queenswood Heights. The doors were always open and the house was filled with teenagers - most of whom didn't actually live there. I remember your mom being kind, welcoming, and clearly she had the patience of a saint to put up with half the student body of Gloucester High School hanging out in the basement on any given day!
Thank you for the happy memories and a safe and welcoming place to go while navigating the perils of high school. Thinking of you all.

Thank you Mrs. T (Helen),
Your home as I remember was like the Waltons - but with excitement!!!
I felt welcomed as though one of your own and it is the first impression that comes to mind when I reflect on those days so long ago.
There was always enough to feed and make room for the unexpected arriving at your door. Helen made the best cornflake macaroon and chocolate chip cookies and I won’t forget how they tasted. There are some things that never leaves our childhood memories, it was a feeling of being part of an amazing family, we had some great times, memories like these stay close to my heart, I am so fortunate.
Al, you found and captured the heart of this beautiful selfless woman--that says a lot about you, so thank you for the loving and fun times at your home so many years ago.
Deb, time and distance has a way of evaporating relationships, yet we are still loving, living and sharing with each other.
Dearest Helen,
Thank you for your living example of patience, giving nature, free-spiritedness and deep thirst for knowledge. It seems to me, you were a woman ahead of your time.

My deepest condolences for the loss of a beloved member of the Tweddle family. While I did not know Helen as well as some, I have fond memories of a bright, smiling face and woman who put up with a lot of antics from her children and us, their friends! Whether it was helping with Halloween costumes, preparing birthday and anniversary celebrations, letting us ‘borrow’ items from the family home during a scavenger hunt, “Sue’s mom” was right there, joining in the fun. We would like to join the others who have sung Helen's praises for the many contributions she made as a very valuable volunteer to her community; publishing the Queenswood Newsliner, taking part with the creation of the historical book of Queenswood Heights, helping with the organizing of many Mayfairs, to name a few. There weren't many times one would enter the community centre and not find Helen at her post.
Our most heartfelt condolences are sent to Allen and family, especially Mark and Terrie who we've come to know best. May your happy memories of your wife and mother sustain you at this difficult time.

Mrs T, as I called her as a young girl, welcomed me into her family as Sue embarked on a journey to make a little girl feel special by becoming a big sister. Little did anybody know that it was not only a relationship that would be built by 2 people but by 2 families. I spent many weekends and summer holidays as part of the Tweddle family. Sharing in holidays and special occasions as the youngest member of the family. I was introduced to murder mysteries, camping, music parties a fantastic card game taught to me by Helen and her mom that I looked forward to playing every time I came over. Helen endured my many questions on life and community in the heights and I’m sure she enjoyed the quiet when I left haha...although I was told that she loved how I kept asking her question after question. She never seemed to grow tired of answering my questions and not having me shut up.
Watching Helen love and support her family taught me the value of being a mother and wife. Being surrounded by the Tweddle family grounded me and as I got older and understood, Helen was the foundation. Her love for books and her pleasure in sharing all her wisdom with others, Helen was a purely selfless soul and her happiness often came from making others happy. Helen, I hope you know how much you made my childhood a special one. You are what many young women, mothers and wives aspire to be. I love you and willy dearly miss you.
My deepest condolences to Al, Steve, Sue, Debbie, Mark, Terry, Matt, Courtney, Chris and your siblings who have to learn to carry you in their hearts and walk a path with you no longer physically in it. You will forever be remembered and loved.

I met Helen and her family through Deb who brought me home to participate in one of their many family gatherings. From that moment they all welcomed me with open arms. Helen was always kind, generous, non judgmental and always made me and my family feel at ease and included us as part of her family. When I was going through a difficult time, Helen knew exactly the right words to say to encourage me and make me feel better. Over the years I became their sister from another mother and feel privileged to have known Helen and for my children to have known her as well. Helen left a stamp on so many people and of course her community. May you rest in peace Helen and watch over all of us. You will never be forgotten and always thought off and spoken in high regards.

I'm so sorry for the loss of Helen, better known to me as "Sue's mom", and wish to extend my deepest condolences to those who knew her more closely than I, especially Al, Sue, Deb, Mark, Terrie, Steve, their spouses and children. The loss of a mother is an experience beyond words, I pray that you all find peace and comfort in her beautiful memory. For me, Sue's mom was an inspiration. She was a mother of 5 kids who deeply cared about community, whether it was the library, resource centre, or streets and infrastructure, Helen was informed and actively participated to make a difference. In my view, much of the community I was raised in, Queeenswood Heights, was shaped by Helen. I feel lucky to have known her and to have had engaging conversations with her about life, family, and community. She welcomed me into her home and to be part of her family's experiences. Milestone birthdays, cottage holidays and busy days at the rec centre are just some of many special memories that will always be with me. Helen, may you enjoy the sunny deck at a summer cottage in the sky- your 'peaceful place' in my mind's eye.

So many people have commented about you, Helen, as a community builder. There is no denying that. but what does that mean?
To me, it is reaching out and connecting with people at a fundamental and human level. It was very subtle for us...first the board games in the family dining room...then came the insistence that as young adults we start contributing, and take part in the Mayfairs and later chaperon the youth dances in the community centre.
We also had so many spirited debates around the issues of the times..Sunday shopping was my favourite...and while I thought we were arguing, It was Sue, who years later, told me how much you loved all of it.
Time moves on. New Years Eve 1984, you were my coconspirator as I finally had enough money for an engagement ring and on cue, you gleefully attacked me about having proposed but not having produced a ring. It was perfect as Karyn came to my defence and I pulled the ring from my pocket. Your’s was the loudest and most enthusiastic laugh...
A few short years later as we decorated your Christmas tree. You pulled out a paper angel from the box of ornaments...the one I had made a few years before as there was nothing to adorn the top of the tree...Sue joked that some day my kids would put that same paper angel up...I answered that you wouldn’t have to wait long...and a few years later it happened - Rachel put that paper angel up.
The years move on, and you can say that you never watched my kids much, but there are too many pictures from inside your house, Petrie island and the nature trails...I guess Sue had a bit of help...
So yes, you were and are a community builder, but you always were and are family first. Karyn, Rachel, Andrew and I are so very grateful and blessed for having been, and continuing to be part of it all.

The Tweddles have always been like my 'second' family. Helen at the centre of it all. Always welcoming me into her home, whether it be a birthday celebration, a holiday dinner, or more often than not, an impromptu drop in.
Of all the special memories, it is those times spent with Helen at home, in her living room, talking about anything and everything, that will remain so near and dear to me. Helen was a kind, generous, and extremely intelligent woman who has cleary left her mark on so many of us.

All of Helen's old friends in the AYPA at The Church of The Messiah in Toronto will be saddened in hearing of her passing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Allen and the family. We remember so many happy times with Helen and Allen in their basement apartment after Sunday evening services. And Allen your parents' home on Avenue Road was always party-central for the group. We have heard lots of news through Barb - I just wish we had been able to keep in touch personally. May you all know the comfort of Jesus.

I met Helen when I was a teenager through Sue. She was always so nice and sweet and never judged me or our group of friends. Every time I saw her she was doing something for someone else, whether it was volunteering at the library, at one of the community centres or helping one of her kids or grandkids. Helen had the natural ability to just make other people around her feel at ease.

Helen was the mom of two of my best friends during my most formative years - and beyond. She had the patience and the generosity of a saint. I always looked forward to our annual Christmas Trivia Pursuit games, which ran late into the night, and were riddled with laughter. She could always spot when Mark was sneaking pie pieces when no one else did.
A pillar in the community, as well as in the lives of many Queenswood youth, she made a very deep and impressionable mark in the most important years of our lives. It's rare we meet a gem of a human like Helen. Rest in peace. xo
